Cancer and Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

In 2019, the American Cancer Association estimated that there were around 1.7 million new cancer cases diagnosed in the United States. Cancer ranks as the second leading cause of death in the country. With over 100 different types, it can impact every organ and tissue in the human body. Cancer develops when abnormal cells begin to divide uncontrollably, often damaging the surrounding healthy cells. These invasive cells can spread throughout the entire body, regardless of where the tumors originated. As they proliferate, they can deplete the body of essential nutrients and resources, including oxygen.
Traditional cancer treatments consist of surgery to remove tumors, which are masses of abnormal cells or tissues that cluster together, as well as chemotherapy and radiation. Both chemotherapy and radiation aim to target and destroy cancerous cells that have spread throughout the body. Although advancements in technology are making these treatments more targeted, they still often cause collateral damage to healthy cells and tissues. Patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiation typically experience severe side effects, such as weight loss, hair loss, digestive problems, extreme pain, fatigue, weakened immune systems, and limited mobility. Sadly, a significant number of cancer-related deaths are due to complications from these treatments.
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy has recently gained attention as a supplementary treatment for cancer and for managing its symptoms. Cancer cells are anaerobic, meaning they flourish in low-oxygen environments. Research indicates that saturating cancer cells with oxygen can make them more susceptible to being killed by chemotherapy or radiation. Some experts also suggest that the pressure from hyperbaric therapy can help deliver chemotherapy more quickly through the body, reducing the time healthy tissues are exposed to the toxic effects. Numerous published studies have demonstrated the ability of hyperbaric therapy to heal damage caused by radiation within affected tissues and organs. Many patients also report anecdotal benefits, such as pain relief, increased appetite, and higher energy levels after undergoing hyperbaric oxygen therapy.
